About Us: The People Behind the Blog

Hello again, dear readers. Thank you for staying with us and choosing to learn more about the issues of gender-based violence and oppression in Canada. If you have not read our welcome post, we encourage you to do so in order to find out what will be discussed in this blog and to learn the definitions of the terms we’re going to use throughout.

We wanted to use this space to introduce ourselves and tell you why we wanted to create this blog in the first place. Feel free to also browse the articles featured on our blog so far.

Who We Are

We are two girl-friends who met at college and became instant buddies. We shared a dorm room and as it turns out, we also share many common interests.

In our first semester of college, we both joined the feminist club to discuss our experience of womanhood and look at issues which mainly affect women such as sexist treatment, loss of employment, the gender pay gap, child-rearing and being the primary caregiver, and unfortunately, gender-based violence.

Why We Created This Blog

It is not hard to see why we created this blog knowing that both of us have been involved with feminist organizations in the past, but it is also our experience and our view of Canadian society which informed our decision.

We both knew that women on general experience more gender-based violence than men, but it was only when we became adults and started discussing that issue with our friends and family that we realized how bad the problem actually was.

We have personally not experienced gender-based violence, but many of our loved ones have. At one lecture of our feminist club, we were asked to share (if we felt comfortable) whether we or someone we knew have experienced gender-violence. There was not a single person in the room who did not know a victim of gender-violence and that was really eye-opening.

If every woman has either experienced, or know someone who’s experienced, gender-violence, then how do we have the right to call our society progressive?

Canada is often said to be a haven for the disenfranchised; people of all creeds are welcome and there are many laws and organizations which protect their rights, and yet, they still experience high levels of discrimination and violence.

This is why we made this blog Canada-specific in order to show that while things here might be better than elsewhere, there is still a long way to go before we achieve the level of equality and freedom of a true progressive society.

We first wanted to make this blog just about gender-based violence but knowing that there are many other groups in Canadian society which are still being oppressed, such as the Indigenous people of Canada, we decided to be inclusive and discuss issues relating to oppression and violence in all its ugly forms.

Thank You

We understand that some might find this blog a really hard read, and trust us, it was hard for us to do the research considering the content matter, we believe that we should bring awareness to some of the worst crimes befalling the most vulnerable communities in Canada.

Thank you for choosing to educate yourself on these topics and for popularising them to ensure that one day our descendants will be better off than us.
