What Canada Does to Prevent Gender Violence and Oppression

Hello and welcome to this blog, dear readers. We are here to talk about the efforts of the Canadian government and those of Canadian communities to curb gender-based violence and oppression and discrimination of all types.

While we realise that this is a very difficult topic and one that may be too harsh on some of our readers, we want to raise awareness of the issue in order to be able to better help the victims of violence and oppression.

Content Warning

We want to warn our readers that the articles featured on this website will often times discuss violent crimes and thus reader discretion is advised. We want to create a safe space for survivors, so please leave the page if you believe that a specific topic might trigger negative emotions and thoughts.

If that inadvertently happens, we suggest checking the mental health resources provided by the Government of Canada. You can find contact information of mental health organisations in your province or contact numbers of help lines which you can reach 24/7 if you’re currently experiencing a mental health crisis.

Blog Content

We will discuss some of the most terrible crimes that impact vulnerable communities in Canada in the hopes that our articles will bring awareness to the issues at hand and thus help those in need.

We will mainly focus on gender-based violence and oppression (racial, ethnic, sexual). We will dedicate articles on a specific issue to examine how prevalent it is in Canada and what can be done to prevent it.

We will also discuss the efforts undertaken by the Canadian government and non-profit organisations in the fight against violence and oppression in the country.

Definitions

We felt it was necessary to give you a few definitions concerning the issues we are going to explore in this blog:

  • What is gender-based violence (or GBV)? Gender-based violence is violence directed at a person because of their gender. Although both men and women can experience gender-based violence, women and girls are more likely to be the victims.
  • What is intimate partner violence (or IPV)? Intimate partner violence is abuse perpetrated by a person against their intimate (sexual, romantic) partner. Most cases of gender-violence are also cases of intimate partner violence. Again, both men and women can be victims of intimate partner violence, but women make up the larger proportion of affected people.
  • What is oppression? Oppression is the prolonged cruel or unjust treatment of an individual or a group of people with similar characteristics by another individual, or group of people, or the state. Oppression mostly affects minorities (ethnic, racial, religious, LGBTQ+) but it can also affect larger groups in society such as women.
